To install the Vensim Personal Learning Edition software, you will need to review and accept a License Agreement. This license agreement will be displayed after you start the installation program.

For Windows 95/98/2000/NT/XP: The file you will download is called venple32.exe. Once you have downloaded it you can install it by asking to run it from Explorer or the Start button. The installation procedure will not make any changes to your system files, but will put a file venple.ini in your windows directory.

For the Power Macintosh (PM): The file is called venplepm.hqx. It is a binhex file and will require translation using a program the will convert a binhex file to a Macintosh executable. Once you have downloaded and converted it you can install it by double clicking on it. This installation file will not, unfortunately, fit on a single floppy disk.

Molecules

We are currently distributing molecules without charge. In the future, we plan to incorporate them into a commercial package that will make them easier to navigate and use. The current implementation is available only as a add-on to Vensim. If you do not have Vensim and would like to play with the molecules, you can download Vensim PLE from the Download page.

To install the Molecules (Version 1.1) software you will need to review and accept a License Agreement. This license agreement will be displayed after you start the installation program.

For Windows: If Vensim is open close it. From the file manager or explorer, run or double click on molec32.exe. (the .exe portion will not always be visible). Read the copyright and license agreement terms. Click on Accept to accept the terms. A dialog box will appear asking for the directory to install the molecules in. The default directory is C:\Program Files\Vensim\Molecule. You can choose another drive and directory if you wish. Click on Install and the molecules will be installed.

For the Macintosh: If Vensim is open close it. The file you will download is called molecule.hqx. It is a binhex file and will require translation using a program that will convert a binhex file to a Macintosh executable. Once you have downloaded and converted it you can install it. Double click on Molecule Installer. Review the Copyright and license information and click on continue to accept the terms. Choose a folder to install the molecules into and click on Install. It is probably easiest to install the molecules into the folder containing the Vensim program file.

Configuring Vensim to use Molecules

If the molecule installation program is successful, you can simply use the menu item Control>Molecule command to open the master molecule. If there is a problem with installation, or if you install Vensim after you install the molecules, you will need to specify the full path to the molecule directory for Vensim. This path takes the form C:\Program Files\Vensim\Molecule or C:\Vensim\Molecule\ on the PC (it is important to keep the last \ in place) and :MacintoshHD:Vensim:Molecule: on the
Macintosh (it is important to keep the last : in place).

Vensim PLE/PLE Plus: If Vensim PLE fails to open the molecules from the Control>Molecule command you will be prompted to type in the path for the molecule directory.

Vensim Standard, Professional and DSS: Under Options>Startup there is an entry for Molecules. Type the full path name next to this entry. You will need to close and reopen Vensim after doing this.

Documentation

An overview of molecules and documentation on using them with Vensim is contained in Modeling for Molecules. If you would like to print the documentation, or just get more complete formatting, the documentation is also available as an Adobe Acrobat file (tutor.pdf). This file is installed when you install the molecules, and is in the directory the molecules are installed in.  Documentation of individual molecules is also contained in the file molecule.pdf.  If you do not have an Acrobat reader (which will allows you to view and print this file) it is available, without charge, for both Windows and the Macintosh from http://www.adobe.com
